PCIe generation and lane width

NVMe drives communicate over PCI Express. The negotiated PCIe generation and number of lanes set an upper transport boundary, so an SSD installed in a slower or narrower slot may benchmark below its headline specification.

Thermal throttling

NVMe controllers can reduce performance when temperature rises beyond their operating target. A benchmark that begins fast and slows during sustained activity may be showing thermal or cache behavior rather than a defective drive.

Power management

Laptops and desktops can use power-saving states that change latency and burst behavior. Compare results under the same Windows power mode and similar idle conditions.

Workloads differ

Large sequential transfers benefit from high bandwidth, while application launches and desktop work often depend more on latency and low-queue-depth behavior.
