HDD Health Guide: Sectors, S.M.A.R.T. & Warning Signs
Learn how to interpret common hard-drive health indicators without relying on one score.

Mechanical drives fail in different ways
Hard drives combine magnetic media, heads, motors and electronics. Some failures show gradual S.M.A.R.T. changes; others can be sudden.
Reallocated sectors
When a drive can no longer reliably use a sector, it may remap that logical address to a spare area. A rising reallocated-sector count deserves attention, especially when paired with read errors or pending sectors.
Pending sectors
A pending sector is waiting for a later successful write/read decision. It may return to service or eventually be remapped. Important data should be backed up before stressing a drive that is reporting unstable sectors.
Sound and behavior matter too
Repeated clicking, spin-up failures, disappearing from the system or severe read slowdowns are operational symptoms that should not be dismissed simply because a summary S.M.A.R.T. status still appears normal.
