NVMe Percentage Used Explained

The NVMe Percentage Used health field is an endurance indicator, not a countdown timer to instant failure.

What it represents

Supporting NVMe devices report an estimate related to consumed endurance relative to the manufacturer’s design life.

100% is not a scheduled shutdown

Reaching the rated endurance point does not mean the drive must immediately stop working. It does mean the rated endurance has been consumed and replacement planning becomes more relevant.

Other health fields matter

Available spare, media/data integrity errors, unsafe shutdowns and temperature add context.

Backups remain independent

Endurance estimates do not protect against controller failure, firmware problems, electrical damage or accidental deletion.

Practical takeaway: interpret storage data in context, protect important files with independent backups, and compare trends rather than relying on a single screenshot.
