Does Benchmarking Wear Out an SSD?

Normal occasional testing is usually a small part of an SSD’s write budget, but repeated large write tests do consume endurance.

Read tests and write tests are different

Read benchmarks do not program new NAND data the way write benchmarks do.

Large write tests add host writes

Repeated sustained-write testing can accumulate significant write volume, especially on small-capacity or lower-endurance devices.

Temperature can matter before endurance does

Back-to-back tests can heat an NVMe SSD and change results, so excessive repetition can reduce measurement quality as well as add writes.

Test with a purpose

Use enough passes to get a stable result, then stop. Benchmarking should answer a question, not become continuous background activity.

Practical takeaway: interpret storage data in context, protect important files with independent backups, and compare trends rather than relying on a single screenshot.
